Preparing to submit your thesis is an exciting yet nerve-wracking moment. One crucial step before handing in your work is to check your thesis for plagiarism to ensure it meets your university’s originality standards. Understanding how plagiarism detection software works, what similarity rates are acceptable, and how to address flagged passages can help you submit confidently. This article explains these key points and shows how Textiaa plagiarism checker can assist you in this process.

Understanding university plagiarism detection software

How plagiarism software scans your document

Most universities use plagiarism detection software that scans your thesis by comparing its content against a vast collection of sources. This includes online websites, academic journals, books, and previously submitted student papers stored in institutional databases. The software analyzes your text for matching strings of words or phrases to identify sections that resemble existing publications.

Common databases and sources checked

The databases checked often include publicly accessible internet content, subscription-based academic resources, and a repository of theses and dissertations submitted by other students at your university or worldwide. This comprehensive comparison ensures the software can detect both blatant copying and subtle overlaps with existing scholarly work.

Difference between similarity and plagiarism

It is important to understand that plagiarism detection software does not label your work as plagiarism automatically. Instead, it generates a similarity report highlighting text segments that match other sources. Similarity means that the software found identical or nearly identical text elsewhere. However, not all similarity is plagiarism—for example, properly cited quotations, references, or common phrases will appear in the report but are acceptable. Recognizing this difference helps you interpret the report correctly and decide which flagged sections need revision.

Acceptable similarity rates and what they mean

Typical similarity thresholds

While policies vary, many universities consider a similarity rate below 15-20% as acceptable for theses or dissertations. This percentage reflects the portion of your document matching other sources. If your similarity score exceeds this threshold, it may prompt further review or revisions.

Variations by faculty or university

Different faculties might have distinct guidelines. For instance, humanities departments may allow slightly higher similarity because of frequent quotations, while science faculties may require lower thresholds. Always consult your faculty’s academic handbook or plagiarism policy for precise requirements.

Why some similarity is normal

Similarity is not inherently problematic. Quotations, properly referenced definitions, or standardized phrases in your field contribute to your similarity score. For example, citing a well-known theory or using technical terms will appear as matches. The key is that these matches are correctly cited and not copied without acknowledgment.

Correcting flagged passages: practical steps

How to paraphrase effectively

Paraphrasing means rewriting the flagged passage in your own words without changing its original meaning. Avoid simply swapping a few words; instead, restructure the sentence and use synonyms while preserving the idea. This reduces similarity while demonstrating your understanding of the material.

Proper citation and referencing techniques

Always cite sources for any direct quotes, paraphrased ideas, or data you include. Use the citation style required by your faculty consistently, whether APA, MLA, Chicago, or another. Proper in-text citations combined with a complete bibliography show academic integrity and respect intellectual property.

Avoiding common mistakes that increase similarity

Common mistakes include overusing direct quotes, failing to mark quotations clearly, or neglecting citations. Additionally, copying text verbatim without attribution inflates similarity scores and risks plagiarism accusations. Balance your thesis with original analysis and ensure every borrowed idea is acknowledged.

Rewrite flagged content thoroughly rather than making minor word changes.
Use consistent citation styles and include full references for all sources.
Limit direct quotes and clearly mark them to avoid confusion.
