Properly citing sources is an essential skill for students and researchers aiming to produce credible academic work. Understanding how to cite sources in academic writing not only helps avoid plagiarism but also gives your work authority and clarity. This article explains the main differences between the four major citation styles—APA, MLA, Chicago, and Harvard—and guides you on how to cite both in-text and in your bibliography with clear examples tailored to English-speaking academic contexts.

Overview of major citation styles

What is APA?

The American Psychological Association (APA) style was developed primarily for the social sciences, such as psychology, education, and sociology. First published in 1929, APA emphasizes the author-date system for in-text citations, making it easy to see the source’s recency. It is widely used in North America and increasingly internationally.

What is MLA?

The Modern Language Association (MLA) style is commonly used in humanities disciplines, especially literature, languages, and cultural studies. Originating in the early 20th century, MLA uses parenthetical citations with author-page formatting, focusing on precise page references when quoting or paraphrasing.

What is Chicago?

The Chicago Manual of Style offers two systems: notes and bibliography and author-date. The notes and bibliography system, popular in history and some humanities fields, uses footnotes or endnotes combined with a bibliography. The author-date system is more common in sciences. Chicago style is known for its detailed guidance on publication formats and flexibility.

What is Harvard?

Harvard referencing is a widely used author-date citation style popular in the UK, Australia, and other Commonwealth countries. It closely resembles APA but with some differences in punctuation and formatting rules. Harvard is often chosen for business, law, and social sciences.

Brief history and fields: APA (social sciences), MLA (humanities), Chicago (history & sciences), Harvard (social sciences and more).
Formatting differences: APA and Harvard use author-date in-text citations; MLA uses author-page; Chicago uses notes or author-date.
Purpose: Each style suits particular disciplines and focuses on clarity, ease of reading, or detailed sourcing.

How to cite sources within the text

In-text citation formats for APA, MLA, Chicago, and Harvard

In-text citations vary with each style but generally include the author's last name and publication year or page number when relevant. Below are examples of citing a book, a journal article, and a website within the text.

APA: (Smith, 2020, p. 45) for a direct quote; (Jones & Lee, 2019) for paraphrasing.
MLA: (Smith 45) for a quote; (Jones and Lee) for paraphrase, no comma between author and page.
Chicago (notes and bibliography): Use superscript numbers in the text1 with corresponding footnotes or endnotes.
Harvard: (Smith 2020, p. 45) similar to APA but with slight punctuation differences.

Common mistakes include missing page numbers when quoting, incorrect punctuation such as misplaced commas or parentheses, and inconsistent author name presentation. To integrate citations smoothly, mention the author's name naturally within your sentence and place the citation appropriately to maintain readability.

Formatting the final bibliography or reference list

Differences in bibliography formatting among APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard

Each citation style prescribes a specific order and punctuation for bibliography entries. Here are key points to note:

Order of elements: APA starts with author, year, title, and publisher; MLA begins with author, title, publisher, and date; Chicago follows author, title, publication details; Harvard is close to APA but varies in punctuation.
Italics and quotation marks: Book and journal titles are italicized in all styles, but article titles are in quotation marks in MLA and Chicago notes and bibliography, while APA italicizes journal titles only.
Capitalization: APA uses sentence case for titles; MLA capitalizes principal words; Chicago and Harvard vary but tend to capitalize major words.
Multiple authors: APA and Harvard list up to 20 authors before using et al.; MLA lists all authors for up to two, then et al. for three or more; Chicago allows all or et al. depending on the version.
Electronic sources: Include DOI or URL where available. APA and Harvard encourage DOIs; MLA prefers URLs without http:// or https://; Chicago offers flexibility.
